IMPORTANT DATES IN THE LIFE OF METHODIST CHURCH NIGERIA 


SEPTEMBER 24, 1842
Thomas Birtch Freeman with two devoted African helpers, Williams de Graft and his wifearrived in Badagry thus Wesleyan Methodist began at Badagry and spread throughout the then Western Nigeria.

FROM 1893 to 1907
The primitive Methodist who were the Eastern Pioneers came from tiny land of Fernando Pro now Equatorial Guinea. The Rev. Finlay and the Rev. Ben Showell worked from 1893 in Arch-bong Town, lkong and Oron before the church moved into Aabdan in south eastern state in 1907. From there it spread to lkot-Epene, Ndoro, Uzuakoli, Ihube, Enugu and other part of igbo land.

MAY 1924
Rev. C. Fi'nlay made a long Journey to Otukpo as a result of which schools were promise and begun in lgunmole, Otobi, lkwonyi, Utinkon, Otukpo, Asia incho and Angelia.

SEPTEMBER 16, 1924
Revd Williams Norcross arrived in Igunmole with Revd. Roberts Benham. They held services for the igbo Railway Workers at Makurdi.

DECEMBER 15, 1932
The Wesley Methodist Church, the primitive Methodist Church and the United Methodist Church amalgamated and formed the Methodist Church Nigeria. But in Nigeria, there were still two separated Districts of the Methodist Church the Western and the Eastern Districts under the care of the British Methodist Conference. All major Church decision then had to be rectified by the British Conference (see the constitutional practice and discipline of Methodist Church by Sender and Finch 1953 page 209, 292 and subsequent edition).

SEPTEMBER 28, 1962
Methodist Church Nigeria became autonomous and the deed of foundation of the conference was signed in the old building of the Methodist Church Tinubu Lagos. The Most Revd. Dr. J. 0. E Soremekun, B.D.D.D became the first elected President. He served for five years.

January 1968
The late Revd. N. 0. Salako was elected second President in January 1968  when former completed his tenured of office.

OCTOBER 4, 1972
 The Revd. Prof. Emmanuel Bolaji Idowu was elected President Methodist Church Nigeria when Revd. N. O. Salako died suddeniy.

JANUARY 20, 1973
The service of investiture and consecration of the newly elected President took place at the Trinity Methodist Church Tinubu Lagos.

SEPTEMBER 9, 1975
 The Methodist Church adopted a new constitution at its annual conference at the Calabar Campus of the University of Nigeria .

JANUARY 20, 1976
 The new constitution of Methodist Church Nigeria was ratified by the signing of the Deed of constitution and reform Order with inauguration of the Patriarchate and Episcopal structure of the ministry of the Methodist Church Nigeria. The First Patriarchate and Episcopal structure of the ministry of the Methodist Church Nigeria. The First Patriarch was His Eminence Bolaji (20/1/76 20/1/85). The charge brought crisis and separation to the Church. Thus the Patriarchal and Presidential came in being.
The Rt. Revd. E.A:A. Adegbola was consecrated at Wesley Cathedral Olowogbowo Lagos on Sunday 16th December, 1984 to head the Presidential side.
His Pre-Eminence Sunday Mbang headed the patriarchal side from 20/1/85 May 3rd 1990.
On the 4th March 1990, both sides held a service of reunification at sagamu and on May 24th 1990 a new constitution was ratified and signed and the title of the head of the Church was changed to prelate and to be addre 'His Eminence” The First Prelate is His Eminence Sunday Mbang.

On Thursday 24th September 1992
The commemorative cross was unveiled at the AGIA tree where the gospel was first proclaimed in Nigeria.

On Friday 25th December, 1992
A special open air service, at Badagry was arranged by Methodist Church of Nigeria (Ahglican Communion) to commemorate the first United worship and Christians were jointly celebrated by the Revd. Thomas Birch Freeman and HenryTownsend on the 25th of December.

On Monday 7th August, 2006
The 2006 CONSTITUTION 0F METHODIST CHURCH NIGERIA was ratified and signed at the 40th/5th Biennial Conference held at Ibom Hall, IBB Way, on0, Akwa Ibom State.

On Thursday 10th August, 2006
His Eminence Dr. Sunday Ola, Makinde, GP], JP, CON, was elected Prelate, Methodist Church of Nigeria at the Emmanuel Hart Cathedral, Etiam Etoi, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State during the 40th/Sth Biennial Conference held between August 2nd to 10th 2006. ‘

 0n Sunday12th November, 2006
His Eminence Dr. Sunday Ola, Makinde was formally invested as Prelate, Methodist Church ofTrinity, Tinubu.

On Sunday 14th May, 2007
The Federal Government formally handed over the provisional license of Wesley University of Science and Technology, 0ndo (WUSTO) to Methodist Church Nigeria.

On Wednesday 14th May, 2008
The Wesley University of Science and Technology, Ondo (WUSTO) officially opened.

On Tuesday 24th May, 2011
The dead of Fusion and Absorption was executed at a divine service at Wesley Cathedral Umuahia by His Eminence Dr. Sunday Ola, Makinde CON, GP], bringing into the fold of Methodist Church, Nigeria, members an} ministers of Methodist Church Nigeria 1962 Foundation Constitution and recognizing and accepting Rt. Rev. Dr. James Alozie as a bishop in Methodist Church Nigeria.

On Sunday lst September, 2013
The Methodist Church Nigeria held her lst Emergency Conference at Wlliams Methodist Cathedral Ago ljaiye, Ebute Metta, Lagos, in the Diocese of Lagos Central. The purpose of the Emergency Conference was to elect the New Prelate at the retirement of His Eminence Dr. Sunday Ola Makinde (CON, GPJ).

On Sunday 1stSeptember, 2013
His Eminence Dr. Samuel Chukwuemeka Kanu Uche JP, was elected as the Prelate of Methodist Church Nigeia at William Memorial Cathedral, Ebute Metta, Lagos in the Diocese of Lagos Central during the 1st Emergency Conference of Methodist Church Nigeria held on the lst September, 2014.

On Sunday 6th October, 2013
 His Eminence Dr. Samuel Chukwuemeka Kanu Uche JP, was formally invested as Prelate, Methodist Church Nigeria at Methodist Church of the Trinity Tmubu, Lagos.

On Thursday 10th October, 2013
His Eminence Dr. Sunday Ola, Makinde (CON, GPJ) retired and handed over to His Eminence Dr. Samhel Chukwuemeka Kanu Uche Jp, at Methodist Church Nigeria Headquarters, Wesley House, 21/22, Marina, Lagos.
